Camp Description
YMCA Camp Belknap (“Belknap”) is one of the oldest all-boys summer resident camps in the country. Founded in 1903 it is an independent non-profit organization affiliated with the national YMCA. Belknap is known for its nationally recognized leadership program, its meticulously maintained physical plant and the development of boys and young men. Belknap employees enjoy being role models by leading by example with kindness, helpfulness, integrity, cultural awareness and joy. Belknap serves 300 boys ages 8-16 and 100 staff at a time. In addition to its core summer programming, Belknap offers both spring and fall programming. Approximately 1,800 campers, adults and families annually enjoy its property located on the shores of beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee in Tuftonboro, New Hampshire.
Job Description

The Facilities Director, a member of the senior management team, is responsible for overseeing the execution of all aspects of Belknap’s 300-acre property, ~75 buildings/structures, infrastructure, equipment, maintenance and facilities planning.  The Director will strive to ensure the property and facilities are of the safest and highest quality in order to support the mission, vision and delivery of Belknap’s outstanding programs. Living on campus in a newly built residence, with excellent benefits, the ideal candidate will have:

 

·       Strong communication and organizational skills

·       A wide-range of facilities and/or project management experience with demonstrated experience leading teams

·       Experience with leadership development and an appreciation for the opportunity for collaborative interactions with staff and campers

·       Knowledge and experience managing sustainability and environmental stewardship practices

·       Strong sense of personal responsibility

Responsibilities

           

Leadership/Cultural

·       Work closely with the leadership team to collaboratively identify and execute on Belknap’s operational and strategic goals

·       Develop teambuilding and educational projects with summer staff and campers

·       Motivate, train, and direct facilities staff and contract workers

·       Set a positive, engaging and team-focused tone throughout the organization and foster the continuation of those relationships

·       Patience and compassion in regard to children and adolescents

·       Sense of humor

Property

·       Manage and execute work relating to roads and trail maintenance, landscaping, mowing, fire pits and campsites

·       Continually develop and execute, Belknap’s forest management plan

 

Permit, Budget and Contract Management

·       Maintaining and renew all permits related to wastewater, drinking water, waterfront activities, building permits, American Camp Association Accreditation and State Permits

·       Manage and report on an annual maintenance budget of $250,000; manage related purchases and inventory

·       Manage individual capital projects ranging in size from $5,000 to $4 million dollars

·       Manage and negotiate contracts with maintenance/service providers and contractors

·       Conduct long-term cost forecasts for maintenance and capital expenditures

·       Understand the regulations and laws which govern successful Camp facilities management. 

 

Facilities

·       Responsible for operating Belknap’s wastewater treatment plant

·       Responsible for operating Belknap’s potable water system,

·       Responsible for ensuring that Belknap’s kitchen is fully operational

·       Responsible for ensuring all buildings and structures are well maintained and safe

·       Oversee all electrical and plumbing systems, maintenance, and upgrades

·       Oversee all fire control systems including related maintenance and training

 

Maintenance

·       Ensure that the work associated with the timely seasonal opening and closing of the entire physical plant is completed

·       Oversee and execute the cleaning of all facilities throughout the year

·       Continually improve Belknap’s waste, recycling and compost programs

·       Ensure that the entire physical plant, equipment and program related facilities have 100% uptime during the camp season

·       Design, implement, and manage a preventative maintenance program covering a wide range of work including painting, maintaining athletic courts, identifying and repairing unsound or decayed facilities and equipment

·       Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies

 

Waterfront

·       Manage the maintenance of non-motorized fleet (~75 craft)

·       Manage the maintenance of motorized craft (5)

·       Obtain and maintain a Commercial Boat License and have or gain comfort in driving boats

 

Program Support

·       Support the camp summer program including, leading campers in activities such as woodworking, environmental education, work projects, or general camp activities

·       Provide support and logistics for programs such as parking and visitor days

·       Oversee camp duties and assure they are completed correctly

 

Other:

·       Implement Belknap’s Master Plan (15-year campus upgrade plan)

·       Develop and implement sustainability measures

·       Maintain safety records as required

·       Perform other work as directed by the Directors

·       Provide on call 24 hours a day while camp programming is in session

Qualifications

Qualifications 

           

·       Minimum of 5 – 7 years’ experience in facilities management or related field

·       Experience motivating, directing, and training facility staff

·       Strong communication skills

·       Experience with contract management

·       Experience with life cycle cost and cost benefit analysis

·       Highly organized

·       Strong organizational and problem-solving skills

·       Self-motivated with the ability to multi-task

·       Ability to work in a summer camp environment and appreciation of what a summer camp offers young people

·       Highly skilled in computer work with experience with the Microsoft suite including Outlook, Word, Excel and project software

·       College Degree or relevant experience

·       Ability to pass a background check

·       Documentation of full COVID-19 vaccination

 

Physical Demands

 

·       Lifting material and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

·       Ability to walk the entire property, including standing and walking for extended periods of time

·       Extended exposure to heat and humidity, and cold and damp environments

·       Working in a primarily outside environment

·       Ability to precisely use machinery, hand tools and power tools

·       Ability to move heavy boxes and equipment

·       Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
