Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Senior Regional healthy Living Director the Community Health and Fitness Specialist will be responsible for providing support and direct instruction for all programs and initiatives. Position has Administrative as well as teaching, personal training and member engagement responsibilities. Qualifications

Physical Demands: 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   

Ability to physically and verbally interact with members and staff. 

At times, be able to lift amounts up to 50 lbs. 

Work Environment: 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 

Ability to be flexible to work evenings, early mornings, weekends and holidays.  

Required Training/Certifications: 

Child Abuse Prevention 

Working on Degree in exercise or health Science or Physical Education 

CPR/AED and First Aid certifications 

Personal trainer certification is preferred or wiliness to work toward 

Education/Experience:  

Bachelor’s Degree in exercise science or health-related field, and/or the equivalent amount of education and experience, and 3+ years of progressive health and wellness experience. 

Must have or be willing to obtain (with in 3-6 months) nationally recognized Personal Training certification. Group Ex certification preferred, but willing to train. Will also need to have or obtain several YMCA program certifications (Livestrong, Enhance Fitness, etc) 

Member/customer experience/engagement orientation, coaching skills and the ability to understand and work with health seekers from culturally diverse backgrounds will be critical to success in this role. 

Ability to communicate effectively in both interpersonal and group settings, with all levels of the organization, strong organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task both short-term and long-term projects are also needed. 

Understand the relationship of the general public to the association, of staff to volunteer, and of staff to staff, and be able to effectively enhance and cultivate those relationships. 

Ability to interpret, carry out and implement into programs, the mission and goals of the YMCA. 

Ability to oversee program implementation while actively handling a variety of functions at the same time. 

Work as an integral member of a staff team. 

Ability to communicate effectively with adults, youth, teens, seniors and special populations. 

Computer literate. 

Essential Functions

Key Functions/Responsibilities: 

50% Administrative: Support all aspects of our community health-related programs and services including promotion/recruitment, enrollment, scheduling, supporting instructors, coordinating operations within the branch, data recording and management, and sharing impact information with the team.  

50% teaching and coaching: Teach several programs and conduct individual personal training sessions as they align with interests and skill set, and as needed to support client demand.  

Work with team leadership and designated association and/or branch staff to help refine and enhance program quality and further develop program materials to consistently deliver the highest quality content and best possible experience. 

Contribute to the development and implementation of new programs and initiatives as needs arise and opportunities are available.  

Serve as a general resource to branch and association staff including managing and reporting data, creating reports and presentations and taking initiative with related administrative tasks.  

Must be interested in working with people of all ages (youth, adults, families) who may have, or be at risk for chronic disease. This often includes people who are new to exercise and requires patience and a willingness to go the extra mile to support those who need extra help. Should be generally engaging and enthusiastic, and enjoys connecting with people.  

Must be willing to pursue additional training and certifications as needed for the position and applicable to the populations being served in this role. Must also be an eager learner willing to independently pursue information related to these populations and programs to educate themselves and be ready to ask questions and effectively contribute to the team. 

Must be reasonably detail oriented and organized, able to capture, track and report data in a timely manner as well as maintain timely communication. Able to follow up and follow through on tasks, requests and essential job functions
