See You at the Top!

In November 2017, Hee-Jin Jun won a sweepstakes she had entered to hike Mount Kilimanjaro. She knew that if she accepted the grand prize opportunity, she would have to dedicate a great amount of time and work into training for the hike. In an effort to begin training, Hee-Jin joined the Y soon after winning the sweepstakes.

"My goal was to do what I can do. It wasn't about getting to the top of the mountain. I just wanted to do my best."

She began working out with YMCA trainer Erica, who worked slowly with Hee-Jin to ease her into a workout routine that would allow her to progress and prepare her for the once-in-a-lifetime hiking opportunity. The Y was the perfect environment for Hee-Jin to train for her exciting adventure. “I really wanted to prepare for it. I didn’t want to fail, and I wanted to feel like I did my best,” she says. Hee-Jin Jun is happy about her hiking results and grateful for Erica and the Y for giving her the resources to prepare her to hike Mount Kilimanjaro.

The California YMCA Youth and Government Model United Nations program is a simulation of the “real-life” United Nations Assembly.  Participants in the Model United Nations (MUN) will take part in some of the activities that the real U.N. participates in.  Ambassadors will research, debate and establish policies, treaties and resolutions focusing on international issues, including disputes between countries, peace keeping responsibilities, border crisis, stabilizing financial markets and dealing with hunger, disease and poverty.

Our informational meetings will be January 8th and 15th; both meetings will be held at the La Jolla YMCA at 6:30pm. Weekly meetings will then held Mondays from 6:30-7:30pm at the La Jolla YMCA starting January 22nd.

Our Youth & Government program works with teens to develop leadership skills, public speaking, critical thinking, and learn about the California legislator and court system. Temporary Aquatics Center Closure

For Your Safety • Ongoing Updates

PONY Baseball season has started and due to safety concerns with baseballs potentially getting hit into our pools, we are closing our Aquatic Center during practices and games. We have been working regularly for a long-term solution with the City of San Diego and the baseball operators. Naturally, more permanent solutions, like a net, require permitting, etc. and take some time.  For more information and for the current pool schedule please click here.
