From the Streets to Safety
A Campaign to Complete our Youth Housing Complex in Escondido
YMCA Youth & Family Services housing programs give unsheltered youth immediate access to a home and intensive support services that help them to thrive and move toward self-sufficiency. When youth know they can sleep safely at night, they are better able to set and achieve goals for long-term success. The combined approach changes their trajectory, prevents chronic homelessness, and sets them on a path to becoming a successful, productive adult and member of our community.
Alex*, like most teenagers, had big plans to grow up and work with children or animals, but all that changed when her mother died unexpectedly. She found herself homeless and resorted to living in the locker room of a local 24-Hour Fitness, where she eventually heard about the YMCA’s youth housing options.
Alex is now a resident in the Y’s housing program. She has taken full advantage of the supportive and therapeutic services which put her back on track to achieving the personal and professional goals she’s set for herself.
With a supportive community and a toolbox of skills to live independently, Alex is accomplishing her goal of working with kids as a Youth Leader with the Y’s Expanded Learning Program at a local elementary school.

OUR PAST AND PRESENT
Over the last 20 years, YMCA Youth & Family Services programs have supported youth in successfully exiting homelessness and pursuing their goals.
The Y’s participants increase their economic stability, educational attainment, and emotional well-being, putting them on a new trajectory toward successful independence. This past year, we have served over 225 youth in housing programs.
Based on current trends in the housing market, the Y will not be able to sustain our housing programs over the next 5-7 years due to increasing rental costs. An investment must be made immediately to mitigate this forecasted risk.
In 2019, we secured a 25-unit apartment building in Escondido. This complex will allow 44 youth to experience safe and stable housing with supportive services to assist them in their quest for well-being and self-sufficiency.
This building is a critical component of the Y’s innovative service model and will allow for increased impact in youth’s lives.
The next phase of our project involves you. We need partners to help us make this building a safe haven for young people to feel secure, stable, and ready to navigate their future plans. We have secured funding for approximately $4.4 million dollars and are in need of support in the form of financial contributions equal to $2.4M to improve the building, renovate for safety, and reduce the principle balance of the purchase price.
IMPROVEMENTS AND RENOVATIONS
TOTAL ACQUISITION COST
Ending youth homelessness is a key strategy in solving chronic adult homelessness, and an investment in targeted youth services will pay dividends when those youth realize their potential and grow into contributing members of our community.
