Healthy Start Building Bridges

Healthy Start was established in 1991 through Senate Bill 620, the Healthy Start Support Services for Children Act, to improve student learning and support families. The Building Bridges program is a collaboration between YMCA Youth & Family Services (YFS), communities, schools and families. This collaboration provides free individual, family and group counseling, Case management, parent education, and teacher support to students attending: Roosevelt Middle School, Sherman Academy, and Ocean Beach Elementary.

Services Provided

  • Case management – connecting families and students to needed resources
  • Individual and family counseling
  • Group counseling – including social skills, anger management and school motivation
  • Parent support
  • School personnel support

Program Eligibility

Our trained coordinators provide support to referred students, families and teachers at Roosevelt Middle School, Sherman Academy and Ocean Beach Elementary School. Coordinators work with the community and school to enhance student and family health.

TIDES

TIDES is a Medi-Cal funded Full-Service Partnership,  EPSDT (Early Prevention, Diagnostics and Treatment) program that offers support to youth and transition age youth (TAY) and their families by providing a variety of counseling services.

We serve students and community members (ages 5-21), and their families, who are struggling with emotional or behavioral problems. TIDES therapists work closely with school personnel and community agencies to enhance the effectiveness of therapeutic services, including:

  • Individual Counseling
  • Family Counseling
  • Group Counseling
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Medication Evaluation
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Case Management

Culturally diverse TIDES program professionals include program therapists, a case manager and psychiatrist. Our program therapists are well trained, graduate level professionals who have a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and/or Social Work. Our Case Manager is a bilingual professional with extensive case management experience and our Program Psychiatrist specializes in family and child psychiatry. All staff work under the supervision of a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Clinical Supervisor and Program Manager.

TIDES Eligibility

We offer free or sliding-scale services based on the following criteria:

  • No cost: Students with full scope Medi-Cal
  • Sliding-scale: Students with no mental health insurance benefits who exhibit socially/emotionally disturbed behavior

Locations

TIDES Counseling Services are offered to students and families at several elementary, middle, and high schools in Central San Diego.
Students who do not attend the designated schools and meet the eligibility requirement can be seen at the main Counseling Center location.
