Since 1851 the Y in the United States has been dedicated to putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Across America, the YMCA has a collective capacity and the strength of our Y Movement to achieve our goals.
With our partners, our resources yield a wide range of services and benefits to strengthen our community for A Better Us. With deep gratitude, we recognize and acknowledge our partners for their continued dedication and support of the Y’s mission, programs and services throughout San Diego County. Together we are committed to giving young people the resources to reach their potential, providing individuals with the access and support to lead healthy lives and connecting neighbors so they can come together for the common good.
Challenged Athletes Foundation
With a shared a commitment to improving the lives of others and making a difference in our community, the YMCA of San Diego County is pleased to partner with the Challenged Athletes Foundation® (CAF). Since February 2013, more than 1,200 San Diego-based physically challenged athletes and their immediate families have received a complimentary lifetime Y membership.
Established in 1997, CAF grew out of a desire to assist one athlete paralyzed in a triathlon. From this modest beginning arose a more important mission to make sure people with physical challenges have the same freedom to enjoy sports as everyone else. All San Diego County CAF athletes are encouraged to visit their local Y branch to sign up for their FREE, life-long, family membership.
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E)
The YMCA of San Diego County is extremely grateful to San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) for its long partnership with the YMCA of San Diego County. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of youth and families have been impacted by their collaboration and generosity.
For over fifteen years, San Diego Gas & Electric has been the exclusive sponsor of the YMCA’s Character Development program, a year-round focus on teaching and demonstrating the core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility in all Y programs. This partnership ensures the availability of program materials like character books and program-specific activity toolkits to help teach core values. Recognition handouts such as value bracelets, ribbons and certificates are also provided through the partnership. Annually, San Diego County’s youth are invited to participate in a values-based poster, essay and speech contest where free prizes are awarded to winners in each grade level.
Through SDG&E’s Civic Leadership program, low-income community Y branches are able to provide scholarships to low-income children in character building programs. These facilities, due to their respective neighborhoods, not only have the greatest need but have the potential of the biggest impact.
