About joel gattey

Joel graduated with his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC). During his time at UCSC, he served as a dormitory Resident Assistant where he mentored incoming freshman who were living away from home for the first time. While finishing his undergraduate degree, Joel served as a teaching and research assistant in several lower division psychology classes, including Social Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Child and Adolescent Development, and Family Systems.

Joel graduated from National University where he received his Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. While attending graduate school, Joel volunteered in the TIDES school-based counseling program through YMCA Youth & Family Services where he provided therapy services to individual students and their families. After graduating, Joel continued to work for Youth & Family Services as an Inclusion Aide in the Inclusion Program providing behavior modification strategies and interventions to students at risk of being removed from after-school care programs due to behavior issues.

Joel has had experience working with individuals and families from a variety of religious, cultural, socio-economic, and ethnic backgrounds. While working in the TIDES program and as an Inclusion Aide, Joel acquired an extensive background working with children who were being impacted by a wide variety of issues including anxiety, depression, behavioral problems, ADHD, developmental disorders, and issues related to grief and loss. He has also had experience working with families and individuals who have recently become parents /caregivers of a child or children who are experiencing mental health issues.

Joel believes in a multifaceted approach when assessing a client’s needs. Over the course of therapy, he prefers to address the impact of emotional, behavioral, physiological and environmental factors that may be affecting the individual and their family. Joel believes it is important to view the family as a unit that functions best when it is working cohesively towards a common goal and encourages his clients and their families to work together towards this end.
