DASH - Frequently asked questions

DASH is strictly for students in 1st-6th grade.

The enrollment for DASH begins in April when applications are distributed to through the schools to each child in each class. Applications are also available on-line, at the YMCA, in the school office and at the DASH program. There is no cost to families who are enrolled.

There is an initial application window that is usually around 2 weeks long and at the end of April.

At the end of the initial application window, all applications received are randomized for each school. The first 75 students from the lottery are then enrolled into the program for the following year. Any additional applications from the lottery are then randomized for their places on the waiting list. Applications received after the initial application window are then placed on the wait list in the order they are received. Applications can be turned in at the DASH program or the YMCA after the lottery has finished. Lottery results are posted at the school prior to the end of the school year.

There is no way to tell if/when children will be enrolled off of the wait list, as it all depends on the participation of the students already enrolled. We assess program attendance on a regular, monthly basis.

Q. Why a lottery?

To ensure every family currently attending a DASH school has an equal chance of getting accepted into DASH, should they complete this application process. Currently enrolled DASH students must reapply and enter the lottery if they are interested in DASH for the 2015-16 school year.

Q. Who is eligible to enter the lottery?

Each student in 1st-6th grades who is enrolled at the DASH school for the 2015-16 school year. Kindergarteners will not be accepted.

Q. Can I enter more than once?

NO. Each family will receive only one lottery number at a given school. Children’s names will be cross-checked. Any attempt to submit more than one application at the same school or across multiple schools will result in immediate disqualification. DON’T RISK HAVING YOUR APPLICATION DISQUALIFIED.

Q. How will the applications be selected?

A computer program will randomly order the total number of lottery numbers that were actually distributed at each individual school. YMCA staff will pull valid applications according to the computer-generated list of numbers until all of the spaces in the program are filled, and will continue in this method for creating the waiting list.

Q. How many students will be accepted into DASH?

Program staffing allows for the daily attendance of approximately 50 students per day. Since we do not expect every child to attend every day, we will automatically enroll the first 75 students from the list. Children from the same family will not be split up as long as their applications are submitted together on the same lottery number. If you have students at multiple schools, please contact us prior to April 26, 2015 at 619-421-9622 ext. 14006 to ensure we consolidate your lottery numbers.

Q. How will I know if my children are accepted?

Lists of enrolled students, as well as the waiting list order, will be available the week of May 18th 2015. Lists will be posted in the school office. Only students identified as ENROLLED may start coming to DASH on the first day of school next school year.

Q. My children were accepted, what do I need to do now?

If you were accepted through the lottery system, then you are done and ready to go for the first day of school. There is nothing else to do except ensure that your child knows that they need to go directly from their class to DASH on the first day of school.

Q. What if my family is on the waiting list?

YMCA DASH staff will notify waiting list families if and when they can start using the program. This will be determined by the usage patterns at individual schools, which change throughout the year. Though we strive to maintain the maximum daily attendance, there are no guarantees that a student on the wait list will be enrolled. If your application number is not announced as ENROLLED, you will need to wait until a YMCA DASH staff contacts you before sending your child(ren) to DASH.

Q. What if I miss the lottery enrollment?

If you missed the lottery enrollment, you will still be able to add your name to the existing waiting list. Applications can be submitted to the YMCA at 1201 Paseo Magda, the DASH program, or applications scanned and emailed to dash@ymca.org and will be added to the end of the waiting list as they are received.

Q. What if I am in another YMCA program?

To be eligible for DASH you must be current with all YMCA payments and balance dues. If DASH conflicts with your enrollment in another YMCA program but you wish to attend DASH, you must call and cancel your other program enrollment and give/honor any appropriate cancellation notices.

Q. How does space become available in DASH during the school year?

We appreciate when families who no longer need DASH inform us so that we can enroll other students. Additionally, students may be dis-enrolled for any of the following reasons: poor attendance, late pickups, and behavior challenges. Please note: students who do not attend for over a month may be dropped without notice.

Q. My child's name is no longer on the waiting list, why?

When space becomes available in a program we call the families in order from the waiting list. If we do not hear back from a family in 2-3 days, we remove that family from the waiting list and move on to the next family. Additionally, if a family is offered a spot but declines, we will also remove their children's names and move on to the next family. Families who accept an available spot will be moved to the enrolled list.
