Throughout the year, there are a number of opportunities to lend a hand to your community. As a Mission Valley YMCA volunteer, your time and talent go a long way. If you don't see one that is ideal for you, suggest your own position! If we can make it work, we'd love to have you on board.

  • If you have already completed the initial volunteer application process, contact Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org, to express interest in any position.
  • Once you have chosen a specific position, we will complete the screening process and you will be cleared to volunteer for any future positions

New to Volunteering?

Please complete a general volunteer application. After processing, you application will be on file at Mission Valley until you contact us to apply for a specific position. Please allow one to two weeks from the time you submit an application.

Swimming Aide
Help out Y swim instructors the larger learn-to-swim classes. We teach swim year-round at Mission Valley and Toby Wells locations and are in need of volunteers who are available on the weekends starting at 9 a.m. Apply to Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org.

Family Programs

Family Program Helper
Jump in to help at one of our activities or events for families! Craft classes, science projects, nature walks, field trips — we have lots of activities! Family programs run on weekday mornings, with some special events on weekends. Apply to Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org.

Kid's Place

Kid's Place Helper
If you already are, or are willing to be, certified in CPR and First Aid and can provide a TB test clearance, help provide a safe place for children (ages six weeks to 12 years old) in our facility while their parents are working out. Play games and participate in activities with children, such as coloring, puzzles and games. Kids Place is open from 7:45 a.m. to 8 p.m on weekdays, and until 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Community Fall Festivals
Off Site
October - November: We need all hands on deck as
our schools host annual fall festivals that include festive games, haunted houses, serving refreshments and more! Apply to Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org.
PRYDE Thanksgiving
Off SiteNovember 19: Give back to the community as we serve 400 people from our school sites, spanning three neighborhoods. Includes carnival games, crafts, student performances, and plenty of food! Apply to Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org.
Swim Aide
Assist in our outreach swimming program, which brings children from local elementary schools to the Y for swim lessons. You will be paired with a staff swim instructor who will lead the lessons. Apply to Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org.
PLAY Assistant
Various local school sites
Physical Learning Activities for Youth (PLAY) assistants will assist in our outreach physical education program. You will be paired with a PLAY instructor who will lead the students in their exercise lessons. Assistants will be responsible for helping setting up, modeling drills, and help instructing in games/workouts. PRYDE Literacy Program

Love reading? Help us inspire the love of reading by joining us at our morning program as a special guest reader, reading buddy, or an extra pair of hands as our students’ reading imaginations roam. Apply to Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org.
PRYDE Lessons
Various local school sitesBe part of the PRYDE lesson that our Y staff delivers once a week which focuses on fostering character development and building positive self-esteem to resist drugs, alcohol, and gang involvement. Apply to Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org.
PRYDE Camp Marston Trip
Camp Marston
March: Spend a weekend in the woods! We need volunteers to help us go hiking, biking, singing, and exploring at the Y ‘s sleep-away camp in Julian, CA. All room and board is provided during this getaway weekend for 140 students and the volunteers.
Linda Vista BBQ
Linda Vista
June: Ring in the spring season as we celebrate the Linda Vista Community with a hosted BBQ! Spend a few hours with other Y staff leading students to explore community partners, play carnival games, and participate in special performances.

Youth Sports

Pee Wee & Youth Sports Scorekeeper
If you are are knowledgeable about basketball, soccer or flag football, you can help coaches and parents with peewee or youth sports. We are in need of volunteers to keep score during league games, which occur on Saturdays or Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Apply to Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org.
CoachBe a coach to players, ages 3 to 17, in our recreational Pee Wee and Youth Sports leagues. Practices are one hour on weekday evenings; games are Saturdays. Apply to Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org.

Youth Basketball Coach
Be a coach to players, age 5 to 17, in our recreational basketball league. We run a 10-week season four times a year, with the following divisions: 5-6 coed, 7-9 boys, 7-9 girls, 9-12 boys, 9-11 girls and 13-17 boys. Practices are one hour on weekday evenings; games are Saturdays. Apply to Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org.
Pee Wee Sports Coach
Coach our youngest players, ages 3 to 6, in a Pee Wee sport class — soccer, tee-ball, basketball, Y’s World of Sports, track and flag football. Classes are 45 minutes on weekday afternoons/evenings and on Saturdays. Apply to Janna Barker, jbarker@ymca.org.


Board of Management

There are more than 2,000 YMCAs in the United States. All of them are directed by volunteer boards. The Mission Valley YMCA Board of Management includes some 50 members of the community who believe in providing the best YMCA for those that don't have the ability to pay for programs.
