Our YMCA Youth Sports Program is dedicated to improving children's sports skills while emphasizing fun, sportsmanship, teamwork and the development of self-esteem.

We offer non-competitive sports for children ages
5-12 and competitive sports seasonally for teens ages 13-17. All skill levels are welcome and everybody plays!

Understanding that every child has different skill levels, the referees are dedicated to explaining fouls before announcing them, and they concentrate on teaching methods that relate to each child's needs.

Attention: Skill Assessments are mandatory for all team sports. For details, click here.

You Can Play, But Can You Coach?

Hear what one of our youth coaches has to say:

“My first contact with the Mission Valley YMCA was in 1994. I had just moved here
from Chicago, and was looking for a basketball court where I could shoot around
and play pickup games. The location on Friars Road seemed like a great place.

Even while I enjoyed playing regularly and meeting new friends, a banner in the gym
seemed to be calling me. It said ‘You Can Play, But Can You Coach?’ Eventually, my
15 year old son encouraged me to coach a team, and a year later, in 1995, I coached
my first team during the winter Youth Sports season.

That was the beginning of a great partnership between me and the YMCA that
continues today. In addition to youth, I have coached Senior Women’s Basketball the
past 5 years, going to 3 National Senior Olympics.

Then, as it is now, my goal has been to help teach the kids sportsmanship,
teamwork, and the development of self-esteem; each of those qualities also
represent other banners that were hanging in the gym at the time. The amazing part about my time with the YMCA is that it has changed and improved my life more than I could ever have imagined.”
