Big Splash Challenge
Eileen Purnell Lost 12-1/2 pounds!Eileen Purnell discovered the Y last summer when she was looking for exercise that wouldn't worsen her ailing knees. "I was headed toward knee replacement," she remembers. "I needed exercise with no impact. That first class with Marion, boy, I was tired. I felt like a frog in a blender, but everyone was really nice. I just followed along. There's just no impact in the water; you can move every which way, and it doesn't hurt."
Eileen has been active throughout her life, and admits she's pretty competitive (she's a three-time winner of the Peninsula Y's Bay2Bay Regatta). So, when the Big Splash Challenge got on her radar, she jumped in. "I needed the accountability and a push to get me going," she says. For seven weeks, she got herself to three water exercise classes per week and had weekly meetings with the Y's nutritionist, Krista Martinez-Trimlett.
Eileen admits she's tried "every diet there is — I've probably lost two elephants in my lifetime. Knowing what to do and doing it are two different things. Krista taught me some new things, too. For instance, I learned that I actually wasn't eating enough! I was trying to do 1,200 calories per day, and Krista taught me that my body was trying to hang on to the weight. I'd heard that theory before, but didn't really believe it." With Krista, she's developed an eating plan that involves no fear of carbs; smaller, more frequent meals; and about 1,500 to 1,700 calories a day. She uses an online nutrition tracking tool, as well. She's down 12-1/2 pounds and is looking forward to the next Big Splash Challenge that starts April 9.
"Water exercise — I'll do it forever. It doesn't matter how old you are or what kind of shape you're in. And KL's (Kari Lorraine's) class on Friday mornings (Deep Water Power)— I can't even wear my sunglasses anymore because she fogs them up! My arms feel three feet longer when I'm finished. And, my knees are 90 percent better now."
