The Y is for Social Responsibility
With a long-standing track record of addressing San Diego County's most pressing social issues related to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, every year, the Y is a place where those in need the most know that they can come to their local branch for support.
"Homeless, without a car, a mother of a nine-month old and a 22-month old, I was new to town and I did not know where to go for help. By the grace of God, I ended up in the lobby of the YMCA.
I had one bag of clothes, one bag of toys, nowhere to live and I was very scared. When I arrived at the Y, the staff was so kind and compassionate; they offered my family and me an opportunity to apply for a scholarship to use the facility and their abundant resources to get back on my feet.
I was amazed at how many activities were offered for all ages. I was more amazed by the freedom and peace that I felt knowing my children and I had been welcomed to such a safe and healthy environment full of genuinely caring people.
Through the assistance of the Y , my children have enjoyed classes such as gymnastics, swimming and Kids ZumbAtomic and the fabulous preschool and Playcare programs.
Because of this opportunity, I was also able to return to a healthy lifestyle by finding housing and enjoying adult conversation with other Y members. The Y has helped me return normalcy to our lives. I honestly don’t know where I would be today without the Y. I am a more confident, responsible mother and woman with two very happy children."
