Position Lifeguard/Aquatics Instructor I

Basic Assignments Responsible for protecting the safety of members and participants in and around aquatic facilities. Adherence to policies and program standards of the YMCA of San Diego County. Provides adequate instruction within National Program and YMCA of San Diego County Guidelines.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 18 years of age or older.
  • Current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and YMCA of the USA Swim Lesson Instructor certification or American Red Cross WSI certification (must crossover to YMCA certifications within 6 months)
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and certifications
  • Current O2 certification
  • Current First Aid certification (must have First Aid for Public Safety Personnel within 6 months)
  • Must pass written and practical skills exam prior to duty
  • Must
    have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents, and
    the physical ability to act swiftly in emergency situations
Major Functions Practice preventive lifeguard techniques at all times to include but not limited to the following:
  • Positioned to have full view of the area of responsibility above and below water surface
  • Scan area of responsibility every 5 to 10 seconds
  • Remain within 4 feet of the pool at all times
  • Perform appropriate rescues
  • Attend at least 2 hours monthly in-service training as scheduled
  • Participate in scheduled and random lifeguard drills
  • Administer First Aid and/or CPR as necessary
  • Be familiar with and abide by YMCA of San Diego County Aquatic Policy and Program Standards at all times.
  • Instructor has written lesson plan for each class session.
  • Communicate effective use of teaching aids, flotation devices, toys and resistance equipment.
  • Enforce safety rules and follows appropriate discipline guidelines.
  • Recognize and corrects improper strokes or skills using positive feedback.
  • Perform chemical tests or maintenance duties as scheduled when not lifeguarding.
  • Educate participants regarding rules and regulations of pool area.
  • Promote the mission, goals and objectives of the YMCA at all times.
