From trash dump to triumph?
San Diego Union Tribune - March 25, 2006

The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA is excited about our alliance partnership with Groundwork San Diego that will completely restore Chollas Creek that runs through the north portion of our property and west of our new acquisition off of YMCA Way. The goal of this project is to continue the incremental restoration of Chollas Creek, an abused, polluted, and partially concrete-lined urban creek draining a large area of the City of San Diego into San Diego Bay.

This will include integrating a preliminary design for an additional parking area to serve the further expansion of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, as well as potential visitors to Chollas Creek by creating a celebrated entrance at Imperial Avenue and YMCA Way with signage, landscaping, and a new parking area that will offset current spaces being vacated for the main facility expansion.

The partnership enthusiastically supports the opportunity to integrate recreational and nature educational opportunities with current facilities and programs. Native vegetation and a pedestrian trail with interpretive exhibits will also be included with a vision of connecting Imperial Marketplace and Market Creek Plaza by a path similar to the San Diego River Walk in Mission Valley.

Thank You!

The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA would like to thank everyone who participates and volunteers for Groundwork San Diego!
