Together we have served the community for over 130 years
The YMCA of San Diego County is extremely grateful to San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) for its long partnership with the YMCA of San Diego County. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of youth and families have been impacted by their collaboration and generosity.
For nearly fifteen years, San Diego Gas & Electric has been the exclusive sponsor of the YMCA’s Character Development program, a year-round focus on teaching and demonstrating the core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility in all Y programs. This partnership ensures the availability of program materials such as character books and program specific Activity Toolkits which help teach core values; along with recognition handouts such as value bracelets, ribbons and certificates. Annually, San Diego County’s youth are invited to participate in a values-based Poster, Essay and Speech contest where free Y memberships and other prizes are awarded to the winner in each grade level.
We are proud that SDG&E not only shares our vision but has the confidence to lend their support for many Y branch events. One such event is the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day which is celebrated annually to emphasize healthy living and is free to the public.
Through SDG&E’s Civic Leadership program, low-income community Y branches are able to provide scholarships to low-income children in character building programs. These facilities, due to their respective neighborhoods not only have the greatest need, but have the potential of the biggest impact.
We are very grateful for the long-standing and significant partnership we have with San Diego Gas & Electric, plus the involvement of key individuals on our YMCA boards, helps create a more effective and dynamic organization in meeting the needs of the community.
When five San Diegans met on April 18, 1881, to incorporate the San Diego Gas Company, they formed a successful enterprise that would serve a fledgling city whose population had just passed 3,000. Exactly 1 year and 9 days later, George Marston and friends adopted the constitution and by-laws of San Diego’s YMCA. Together we have served San Diego’s growing community for over 130 years!
