TEACHING CARING, HONESTY, RESPECT, AND RESPONSIBILITY

YMCA Four Core Values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility

Thousands of children and their families all across the county are engaged and focused on the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility as all branches celebrate Character Development Month during October.

Through a special grant and partnership with SDG&E, the YMCA has dedicated this month to help others understand and demonstrate these values through a variety of programs and activities.

All of our branches participate in a variety of ways, including:

  • Taking the Y Good Character Challenge! Sign our boards and commit to living by our core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
  • Encouraging all kids to participate in the YMCA of San Diego County Essay and Poster Contest (details below!)
  • Urging everyone to volunteer or participate in a Community Service Project in October
  • All Y Family Child Care Centers and before and after school sites highlight our character values through special literature and educational tools
  • Giving out fun stuff that recognizes and rewards good character
  • Engaging, family activities and recognition for kids and adults that encourage good character
  • Holding family activities that celebrate good character

The Y's Four Core Values

For over 15 years, the YMCA Character Development Month has highlighted the Y’s year-round focus on teaching and demonstrating our core values in its programs. These values are the shared beliefs and essential principles that guide our behavior, our interactions with others, and our day-to-day decision making, uniting us as a movement with a common cause.

CARING: Showing a sincere concern for others.

HONESTY: Being truthful in what you say and do.

RESPECT: Following the golden rule.

RESPONSIBILITY: Being accountable for your promises and actions.
