Dear YMCA Friends:
For the first time in 43 years, YMCA of the USA has unveiled a new brand strategy. You may have seen or heard about it since we’ve received quite a bit of national and local media attention recently.
The Y has been one of the most important nonprofits in the United States for decades. But recent research showed that our cause and impact are not fully understood. We are changing how we talk about ourselves so that people better understand the benefits of the work we do in this community.
This process includes highlighting the three key areas where we impact lives: Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
We are increasing understanding of the impact that YMCAs make in communities across the country, extending our reach into communities to nurture the potential of youth and teens, improve the nation’s health and well-being and provide opportunities to support neighbors.
As a responsible non-profit we are taking the re-branding process one step at a time here in San Diego County. It would be disruptive and impractical to transform all of our communications overnight.
Some changes will happen immediately including the new Y logo you see on all of the YMCA of San Diego County websites, others will be phased in over time. The new logo, with its forward-looking design and multiple color options, reflects the vibrancy of our organization and the diversity of the communities we serve.
It’s important to note that our mission remains unchanged: to improve the quality of human life and to help all people realize their fullest potential as children of God through the development of the spirit, mind and body.
Moving forward we will be using the nickname "The Y" more frequently - because that is how people in communities nationwide most commonly refer to us. But on virtually every sign, in every brochure, and on every website, you will still see the letters "YMCA" prominently displayed.
Richard A. Collato
President and CEO, YMCA of San Diego County
